SHAH ALAM, March 14 — The final list of athletes who will represent Selangor at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 is expected to be announced in June following a stringent selection and development process.
State executive councillor for sports Mohd Najwan Halimi said the athletes are currently undergoing the final phase of training as well as a series of selection trials conducted by the Selangor State Sports Council (MSN).
He said the selection criteria are not only based on sporting performance but also take into account discipline, including adherence to prescribed training and nutrition programmes.
"Although their names were proposed by the respective sports associations, MSN will still monitor. They have to undergo training and must possess good discipline.
"Those who are undisciplined and fail to adhere to the rules will not be selected, even if they perform well. We want disciplined athletes who won't take any form of challenges for granted."
He said this when met at the Jom Shopping Aidilfitri voucher handover ceremony for the Kota Anggerik state constituency here today.
Last month, Selangor MSN executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said the state contingent is targeting 80 gold medals at the upcoming SUKMA.
He believes Selangor athletes can emerge champions in up to 20 per cent of the overall 474 events to be contested across 37 sports.
At the SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak, Selangor finished third overall, securing 181 medals — 56 gold, 64 silver and 61 bronze.
The 22nd SUKMA in Selangor will be held from August 15-24, with the opening ceremony at the Sepang International Circuit.
Para SUKMA, meanwhile, will take place from September 15-20, involving 10 sports, namely swimming, athletics, badminton, ping pong, tenpin bowling, lawn bowling, archery, chess, boccia, and powerlifting.
