Selangor DAP rolls out free legal advice to empower women

SHAH ALAM, Mar 9 — In conjunction with International Women’s Day 2026, Selangor DAP has launched a free Legal Advisory Programme to help women facing legal issues obtain professional guidance.

According to Selangor DAP Women’s Wing chief Yeo Bee Yin, the initiative offers women in Selangor an initial legal consultation at no cost, aimed at helping them understand their legal options and the steps needed to address their cases.

Yeo was quoted by The Star as saying many women are still unsure where to seek help when dealing with matters such as housing disputes, domestic abuse or sexual assault.

“So, we hope that this programme will direct them in the right direction in pursuing legal advice and action for their problems,” she said, reported the English daily.

Yeo said a panel of 10 practising lawyers has been assembled to assist applicants, focusing mainly on matrimonial and family matters, child custody, as well as probate and letters of administration related to inheritance.

Subang assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze, which is part of the panel, said applicants will be contacted within 24 hours after submitting their request.

“They can apply online or reach out to any state assemblyman’s office. Once an application is received, a panel lawyer will contact the applicant based on the requirements of the case and language preference.”

Ng added that if a case requires further legal action beyond the initial consultation, applicants will be referred to relevant agencies, such as the Selangor Legal Aid Department, the Selangor Legal Aid Fund, or the Selangor Legal Aid Centre.

The programme is open to women residing in Selangor who are not currently represented by a solicitor.

Meanwhile, Wanita DAP chief and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching  highlighted increasing digital risks faced by women, especially through the misuse of artificial intelligence.

“AI has supercharged the tools of harassment and violence. For example, deepfake pornography is one of the fastest-growing forms of online abuse, and it is overwhelmingly weaponised against women and girls.

“Studies consistently show that over 90 per cent of deepfake pornography features women,” she said.
