Media Selangor strengthens digital transformation, establishes ‘super newsroom’

SHAH ALAM, March 6 — Media Selangor Sdn Bhd is continuing to strengthen its digital transformation by implementing an integrated newsroom concept (newsroom convergence), or a ‘super newsroom’, to ensure its media platforms remain relevant in the era of technological change and artificial intelligence (AI).

Its chief executive officer Mohamed Fareed Mohamed Ashaaree said the move was introduced to adapt the organisation’s operations to the evolving media landscape, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw a surge in the use of digital platforms.

The shift has also prompted Media Selangor to change its content delivery approach from a traditional model to a more digital and multi-platform strategy.

“Although Media Selangor is the official media of the state government, we must continuously adapt to change as Selangor is a developed state with high Internet penetration.

“After the pandemic, when more people began obtaining news through digital platforms, we started redirecting the newsroom’s direction to become more digitally oriented,” he said.

Fareed was speaking as a guest on the 'Apa Khabar Malaysia' programme by Bernama TV today, discussing the topic 'Technology Wave and the Transformation of News Content'.

Journalists now need to master multiple skills

He added that the convergence process integrates newsroom operations while upskilling and reskilling staff to produce content across multiple platforms.

The changes also require journalists and media crews to master a broader, more diverse set of skills.

“Now, a cameraman or photographer must also be skilled in shooting video, while journalists are not only required to write news but also need to become content creators.

“This change is important to ensure the content produced remains relevant to current developments,” Fareed said.

He also emphasised that technologies such as AI should be accepted and utilised as tools to assist media work, rather than rejected outright.

“I always remind the team that in the media world, if we do not adapt, we will not remain relevant. We need to embrace technology and use it to assist our daily work, including applications such as AI,” Fareed said.

The acceptance of technology among Media Selangor staff is increasingly positive as employees begin to use various digital applications for content production.

Media Selangor implements a convergent concept that unites editorial, creative, and technical teams towards a more dynamic work culture.

Content tailored according to platform

The organisation also regularly holds editorial discussions and brainstorming sessions to ensure that every piece of content produced adopts a fresher approach that aligns with today’s media consumers' habits.

He noted that content is also organised for distribution across platforms, including news portals, newspapers, infographics, and videos on social media like Instagram and TikTok, to reach a wider audience.

Meanwhile, 2026 is expected to be an important year for Media Selangor, with several major events scheduled in the state.

They include the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), the Para SUKMA Games, the Visit Selangor Year 2026, and the Silver Jubilee celebration of the reign of the Sultan of Selangor.

Fareed said Media Selangor is planning more creative, comprehensive coverage to ensure each of these events reaches the public with a fresher, more engaging approach.
