SUKMA 2026: Media Selangor enlists influencers for coverage

SHAH ALAM, March 6 — Media Selangor is pursuing a fresh approach to covering the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2026, including by making space for social media content creators and influencers to cover the event.

Media Selangor chief executive officer Mohamed Fareed Mohamed Ashaaree said the approach is to cater to the younger generation, which prefers to obtain information via digital platforms and content creators.

He said the move was inspired by coverage of the Paris Olympics 2024, which had content creators covering events at sporting venues.

“It means the coverage won’t just be coming from conventional media like RTM, Bernama or Astro, and Media Selangor, but also from content creators with their own followers.

“Maybe popular content creators like Khairul Aming could come and cover (this event).

“The younger generation of today might not follow conventional media, but prefers following content creators and influencers on social media. That’s why we want to open this space to them so SUKMA coverage may reach a wider audience,” he added.

Fareed said this in an interview on Bernama TV’s Apa Khabar Malaysia? programme, which featured the topic “The Technology Wave and Transformation of News Content”, today.

Fareed said SUKMA 2026, which will be held on August 15 to 24, with Para SUKMA on September 5 to 14, has been long awaited by Selangoreans as the state will host the event again after 26 years.

Media Selangor is the communications, broadcasting and digital coordinator for SUKMA and Para SUKMA 2026.

Promotional efforts for Selangor tourism

In a separate development, Fareed said Media Selangor is helping promote tourism destinations in the state in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2026.

He explained that Selangor is the main gateway to Malaysia as most international travellers enter via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, and Port Klang, which are all in Selangor.

“Our challenge is to ensure travellers who arrive at this gateway spend time and stay in Selangor before continuing their journeys to other states.

Media Selangor works closely with Tourism Selangor to popularise various tourism locations in the state,” he said.

Fareed added that besides popular destinations like Sekinchan and Kuala Selangor, the state has many other tourist attractions in urban areas, including gastronomy tourism which is popular in the Klang Valley.
