SABAK BERNAM, March 5 — Two hundred households affected by the high-tide phenomenon during the northeast monsoon have received RM500 each through the State Disaster Fund.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim presented the aid to recipients during the Bantuan Wang Ihsan handover ceremony at the Sabak Bernam District and Land Office complex.

Ng said the aid was expedited as Aidilfitri is near and the state wanted to ease their burdens.

“For the first phase today, we channelled aid to 200 recipients with an overall total of RM100,000,” he told reporters after the ceremony.

Ng said high tides and strong winds in November last year caused flooding in several coastal areas, including Sekinchan, Parit Lima, Sungai Besar, and Sungai Air Tawar.

He added that several breakwaters had also burst, which flooded some residential areas.

According to him, the state government is upgrading breakwaters in high-risk areas to lower the impact of recurrences in the future.

“So far, more than RM4 million has gone to upgrading breakwaters in Sekinchan, and we will continue to improve the structures, especially in critical areas,” he said.

Ng added that the remaining victims will receive disaster aid in the second phase soon.
