SHAH ALAM, Mar 4 — Repair works on the top floor of Block D at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras Jaya are expected to begin in the third quarter of this year, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
According to Fadhlina, the top floor has been closed since June 2024 after a structural forensic inspection by the Public Works Department (JKR) found the wooden roof trusses potentially prone to failure and at risk of collapse.
“JKR recommended that the entire roof structure of Block D be demolished and rebuilt, and that the top floor be closed as a restricted area for safety reasons,” she said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.
She was responding to a question from Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan about the repair timeline and interim measures to address classroom shortages.
To ensure teaching and learning continued, Fadhlina said 180 Form Three students were temporarily relocated to five Design and Technology workshops.
She added that the MOE had approved RM1.7 million for the repair works and officially handed the project to JKR on January 30.
“JKR will finalise the repair design, confirm the work scope, and submit projections before physical works commence with MOE’s approval. The project is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2026.”
She said the ministry will continue to work closely with JKR and monitor the progress to ensure the repair works are completed as planned, while safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of the school community.
