Army credibility built on integrity and professionalism, not slogans — PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 — Public trust in the Malaysian Army cannot be built through slogans alone, but must be strengthened through firm and consistent professionalism, accountability and integrity at all levels of administration and operations, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

In a Facebook post today, Anwar said he stressed the matter during a courtesy call with new army chief Datuk Azhan Md Othman, at his office in Parliament.

Beyond discussing the army’s strategic role as the nation’s defence backbone, the Prime Minister underscored the need to ensure the institution remains credible, authoritative and free from practices that could undermine the image of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).

“In the context of current challenges, including abuse of power and corruption that can tarnish institutional integrity, I also stressed that there can be no compromise on breaches of trust. This demands transparency, honesty and the courage to address weaknesses to safeguard the dignity of the Malaysian Armed Forces.

“The Madani Government will continue to support efforts to ensure the Army remains a respected, professional and credible force, while safeguarding the welfare of officers, personnel, their families and veterans,” he posted.

Azhan, who previously served as MAF headquarters chief of staff, was appointed as 31st army chief effective January 1.
