State maintains ban on animals at malls — Exco

SHAH ALAM, Dec 17 — Malls in Selangor are not allowed to admit visitors with pets, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

He said the ban remains in effect as the state government assesses existing guidelines to ensure it is in line with the sensitivities of a plural society.

“Selangor, as a progressive and world-class nation, all steps that involve certain policies must be scrutinised, unlike some pet-friendly countries.

“Based on our diverse cultures, we must study whether it is feasible at malls. It can be discussed but there is no solution as this matter has its pros and cons.

“So far, no malls allow animals in, and the ban remains even though some people flout it. We will discuss this periodically,” he said.

Ng said this during a mega cleanup operation by KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) on Jalan Kristal in Section 7 here today.

In these past few days, there has been uproar on social media over how a new mall in Kuala Lumpur is allowing visitors to bring their pets into the premises.

The outlet claims to be the first mall in the capital that is “pet friendly”.

However, this has caused unease among Muslims as dogs are categorised as “najis mughallazah (severe filth)”.
