KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — The principle of the rule of law applies equally to all individuals without exception, including the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), following the latest allegations over share ownership involving Tan Sri Azam Baki.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Kulasegaran Murugeson said a thorough investigation must first be conducted to verify the allegations highlighted in an international media report before any final decision is made.

He stressed that Malaysia’s legal framework does not provide special protection to any individual, including leaders of enforcement agencies.

“We must understand that nobody is above the law in Malaysia. Nobody is above the law, and this includes the MACC chief commissioner,” Kulasegaran said when winding up the debate on the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The matter was raised by Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim and Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, who sought the government’s clarification on a Bloomberg report alleging that Azam held millions of shares in a financial services company.
