SHAH ALAM, Feb 2 — Ammonia levels in Sungai Selangor, which had risen above standard limits early yesterday morning, have now returned to normal. The river’s condition is reported to be good and under control.

The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) said the increase in the ammonia parameter was detected at 3.15am at the intake point of the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant (WTP), with readings exceeding the prescribed limit of 1.5 milligrams per litre (mg/L).

Following this, LUAS, together with Pengurusan Air Selangor Berhad, immediately conducted investigations to identify the cause of the incident and implemented intensive monitoring at several locations, including Sungai Sembah and Sungai Selangor.

To curb the increase, the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) project and the KL Larut alternative water source pond were activated to increase the river's dilution factor. A total of 1.784 million litres per day (MLD) of water was channelled into Sungai Selangor from 9.30am to 9.30pm yesterday.

Field investigations conducted from early morning until night, covering upstream areas including Sungai Kundang, Sungai Gong, and Sungai Selangor, found no suspicious discharges or activities in breach of regulations.

The authority added that on-site observations revealed the rise in the ammonia parameter was likely due to a low dilution rate following reduced rainfall since early last month.

Nevertheless, LUAS will continue close monitoring at the relevant locations to ensure there are no other risks that could affect river water quality or the operations of WTPs in Selangor.

“As of 9.30pm last night, ammonia levels in the Selangor River have returned to normal, and the current situation is under control,” it said in a statement.
