KUALA LANGAT, Jan 29 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is targeting a recycling rate of 15 to 20 per cent statewide this year by implementing the Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar).
Its managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said the target builds on last year’s achievement of a 15 per cent recycling rate as set out under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).
“For this year, KDEBWM is targeting a recycling rate of between 15 and 20 per cent across the state by intensifying the comprehensive and focused implementation of the SELKitar initiative.
“KDEBWM will roll out the SELKitar programme in more districts and local authority areas, starting with schools, to raise public awareness and consciousness,” he said.
Ramli was speaking to the media after the launch of the SELKitar programme by the Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL), officiated by its Deputy President Ahmad Zaki Yusof at Dewan Sri Jugra today.
He added that KDEBWM will expand strategic cooperation with all local authorities in Selangor to strengthen the implementation of the SELKitar programme statewide.
“MPKL is the first local authority to implement it starting this month, and we already have a schedule to tour the whole of Selangor until the end of the year.
“This initiative not only involves environmental education and awareness programmes, but also includes support measures such as the provision of recycling bins and cash incentives for participating schools,” Ramli said.
SELKitar, introduced in April last year, is a long-term state government initiative aimed at driving circular economy practices through more effective waste management.
Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said it had successfully collected 77,022kg of recyclable materials as of October 31, 2025.
He noted that the figure is expected to continue rising in line with operational optimisation and the expansion of service coverage to more than 400 residential areas across Selangor.
