SHAH ALAM, Jan 27 — The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor, scheduled for August, will feature a new concept that is fresher and more dynamic, and which is expected to serve as a benchmark for future championships.
State Executive Councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Najwan Halimi said that as the host, Selangor is not merely targeting medal tallies, but aims to deliver a comprehensive experience for all participating contingents.
“In terms of fundamentals and standards, organising SUKMA is largely the same across states, but what sets Selangor apart is the overall experience, not just the competition.
“We do not want SUKMA to focus solely on athletes, but on how we elevate the organisation, involve youth, the community, and creative elements.
“We guarantee that the opening ceremony will be different. The concept will be fresher and more energetic, reflecting Selangor’s identity as a modern and progressive state,” he told Media Selangor.
Najwan added that the organisers will also strengthen facilities, athlete development, and the sporting ecosystem so that the biennial Games do not merely conclude successfully, but leave a lasting legacy.
“This is what we are planning, so that SUKMA Selangor is not just a host, but a benchmark for all,” he said.
During his 2026 New Year Address yesterday, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari reminded all parties to give their full commitment to organising SUKMA 2026 so that the Games become a truly memorable event.
“We must ensure that come August, we succeed in avoiding any administrative or management issues so that SUKMA 2026 becomes a SUKMA to be remembered, one that has an impact on unity and solidarity among the people,” he said.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 will feature 474 events across 37 sports from August 15 to August 24, while PARA SUKMA will involve 10 sports and nearly 300 events from September 5 to September 14.
A total of 52 competition venues across nine districts will be used, involving 12 local authorities, public and private institutions of higher learning, and government and private agencies, including the National Velodrome in Negeri Sembilan.
The SUKMA torch relay is expected to begin in April, passing through all nine districts in Selangor to further enliven celebrations of the state's largest sporting event.
