Putrajaya backs Selangor’s tourism sustainability fee

SHAH ALAM, Jan 22 – The Federal government has expressed support for Selangor’s decision to impose a sustainability fee beginning this year, describing it as a key step towards promoting responsible tourism.

Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the fee, which falls under the state government's jurisdiction, aims to generate funds for tourism development.

He noted that similar fees have been implemented in other states, including Pahang, Penang, and Melaka.

“We support and welcome the implementation of the sustainability fee in Selangor, as it is seen as an important step towards responsible tourism with positive impacts. However, its implementation requires cooperation, understanding and awareness from all stakeholders in the tourism industry.

“The funds will be used for heritage and environmental conservation, maintenance of tourism infrastructure, and strengthening tourism promotion,” Tiong said in a Parliamentary reply yesterday.

He was responding to Sabak Bernam MP Kalam Salan’s query on the challenges faced by homestay operators following the regularisation exercise and the introduction of the fee in Selangor.

Tiong added that his ministry will work with stakeholders if any issues arise during the implementation of the fee.

Selangor began imposing a sustainability fee on tourist accommodations beginning January 1.

However, on January 7, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the Selangor government has decided to allow a three-month transition period for industry players to implement the introduced fee and familiarise themselves with the mechanism.

Revenue from the sustainability fee, which is paid by tourists, will be used to upgrade tourist facilities, maintain the environment, as well as support greening projects and sustainable development.

The collection mechanism will be managed by the local authorities, while hotels will act solely as collection agents.
