SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 — From next year, preschool education will start for children aged five, while Year 1 is open for the enrolment of six-year-olds, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He announced the change during the National Education Blueprint 2026-2035 launch ceremony here today, but added that the change hasn’t been made compulsory, reported Sinar Harian.
“For 2027, we haven’t made it compulsory. There could be parents who feel their children aren’t ready. Seven-year-olds can still enter Year 1, but an earlier start is recommended,” he added.
Anwar said this is in line with changing times and current demands, as today’s children mature earlier and are able to understand complex concepts at five years old.
He stressed that the preschool system would be given focus, taken over, and coordinated by the Education Ministry (MOE).
He also assured preparations for the earlier intake initiative would be expedited.
“I have ordered that from now, (initiatives) that have been announced need quick action by ministries involved to ensure basic facilities are added,” Anwar said.
