KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 — UMNO will only hold its election after the 16th general election (GE16), said party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said this is possible due to the amendment to the party’s constitution at the Special UMNO General Assembly in 2022.
“We will wait until after the general election. We have a period of 18 months, the UMNO constitution was amended; (polls) can be held 18 months from the end of the election year or after the general election, whichever comes first,” said Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the exchange of memorandum of understanding and memorandum of cooperation in conjunction with the Agrocommodity, Women in Halal Industry Expo here today.
The last UMNO election was held in 2023, with the president and deputy president posts uncontested.
