SHAH ALAM, Jan 13 — The Selangor Ponggal Festival will be held on a grand scale in Ampang on Saturday, said state co-chairman for Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, and Tao Religions in Selangor (Limas) Papparaidu Veraman.

The full-day programme will start with the ponggal rice-cooking ceremony at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kampung Tasek Permai, Ampang Jaya, from 8am to 2pm.

The opening ceremony and main event, meanwhile, will be held in the evening from 6pm to 11pm at Dewan Dato’ Ahmad Razali.

The state government initiative will also feature various activities like traditional Tamil sports and a lucky draw.

Papparaidu said the opening ceremony will be officiated by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The festival, which is set to draw some 8,000 visitors, will also be attended by federal ministers, state executive councillors, and elected representatives.

“In line with the Malaysia Madani vision, the celebration is expected to be vibrant, highlighting the spirit of unity and cultural pride among the multiracial community.

“Guests will also be treated to traditional vegetarian dishes served on banana leaves,” Papparaidu said yesterday.
