Private university compressor explosion claims one life, nine others injured

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — A man died, and nine others were injured when an air conditioner compressor exploded at HELP University in Bukit Damansara, this morning.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that a 24-year-old, who worked with the air conditioner contractor, died while being treated at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

“The latest development is that another victim has been identified, bringing the total number of victims involved to 10, compared to the nine injured victims reported previously,” he said in a statement today.

Ten individuals were injured in an explosion involving an air-conditioning compressor at a private university in Bukit Damansara this morning. Eight victims are locals and two others are foreigners.

Fadil added that the sole fatality was one of the eight, while two others are severely injured and receiving treatment, two male and two female students, along with a technician, all of whom sustained different levels of injuries.

“The other two victims are foreigners, Indonesians working as cafeteria workers who sustained minor injuries,” he said.

The nine are currently being treated at different nearby hospitals, including the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

The police received a distress call about the explosion in the maintenance area next to the cafeteria of the four-storey building at 11.40am.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Hassan 'As'ari Omar said that preliminary inspections found the explosion was caused by leaking air conditioning gas, and that the investigating team is still at the scene of the blast.

A Bernama check at the blast scene in the morning revealed that two Fire Department K9 tracker dogs are involved in the operation.
