ISTANBUL, Jan 9 — Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council (STC) has announced that it has dissolved itself along with all its main and subsidiary bodies, cancelling its offices inside and outside the country, Anadolu Ajansi reported.
Citing Yemen’s state news agency Saba Net, it reported that the council said the decision was taken in preparation for participating in a comprehensive southern dialogue conference to be held in Riyadh under Saudi sponsorship.
The STC stated that it had failed to achieve its intended objectives, stressing that it was not involved in the decision to launch military operations in the eastern provinces of Hadramout and Al-Mahra, which it said had harmed the southern cause.
The group called on southern political figures and leaders to engage in dialogue, expressing hope that the Riyadh conference would lead to a clear vision for resolving the southern issue.
Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman welcomed the decision, describing it as a “courageous step” that prioritises a solution to the southern issue.
In an X (formerly Twitter) post, he said the move would encourage broader participation by southern Yemenis at the Riyadh conference and help bring together different southern voices.
Saudi Arabia will form a preparatory committee, in consultation with southern figures, to organise the conference, stressing that its outcomes will be supported and presented as part of efforts toward a comprehensive political solution in Yemen.
