MBPJ urban agro project receives MGSA Elite Award for sustainability

SHAH ALAM, Jan 9 — The Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) Urban Agriculture Innovation, Research and Learning Centre marked an excellent achievement when it won the Elite Award at the Malaysia Global Sustainability Awards 2025 (MGSA) yesterday.

The prestigious award is MBPJ’s first achievement in 2026 — a result of its various transformations and innovations towards building a sustainable, liveable and prosperous city.

“Congratulations to the MBPJ team, which comprises three Landscape Department personnel and three strategic partners from MEA Aquaponics, on its success in achieving the Elite Award,” MBPJ posted in a statement on Facebook.

The award was presented by Universiti Islam Antarabangsa acting rector Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abd Razak and Sustainable Business Network (SustNET) Malaysia president Nor Saidatul Akmar Mazelan to Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon.

MBPJ said the project logged a score of 89 per cent on the PS Sustainability Scorecard, and has comprehensive environmental, social and governance (ESG) data reporting.

The centre was established as a research and learning medium for urban agriculture, in line with efforts to make Petaling Jaya a green city that prioritises sustainability and social inclusivity.

This achievement is evidence of MBPJ’s continuous commitment in facing the challenges of a modern city with sustainable solutions that positively impact the local community.

“MBPJ remains committed to driving the urban sustainability agenda for a greener, more inclusive, and more prosperous future,” the statement read.

The MGSA, organised by SustNET with the involvement of various parties including local governments and the private sector, recognises high-impact sustainability initiatives.
