Religious school teacher pleads guilty to sexually assaulting two male pupils

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 — A religious school teacher pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court today to three charges of committing physical sexual assault against two male pupils.

The accused, a 40-year-old Indonesian named Kumpul, was charged as a person in a position of trust, with committing physical sexual assault against the two boys, who were aged 11 years and seven months, and 10 years old, respectively, at the time of the offences.

The offences were committed at a religious primary school in Wangsa Maju between April 2024 and last month.

He was charged under Sections 14(a) and 16(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Section 14(a) carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment and is punishable by caning, while Section 16(1) prescribes a maximum of five years' imprisonment and at least two strokes of the cane.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Pervinah Mohamad Yusof did not offer bail, citing flight risk and discrepancies in the accused's passport information in his immigration records.

Judge Noridah Adam denied bail and set January 5 and January 21, 2026, for the presentation of facts and sentencing. Kumpul was unrepresented.
