Muhyiddin quits as PN chairman

SHAH ALAM, Dec 30 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has resigned as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, effective January 1.

In a brief statement, the Pagoh MP expressed his gratitude to the coalition’s leaders for their support since the bloc’s establishment five years ago.

“I wish all members of the PN leadership and its component parties every success going forward,” he said today.

No reason was given for his resignation.

Muhyiddin’s move comes amid growing discontent within the PN outfit, the latest being the political crisis in Perlis that saw a change in menteri besar.

Several PAS leaders expressed dissatisfaction after new Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah was appointed from Bersatu, to replace PAS’ Mohd Shukri Ramli.

Muhyiddin has led PN since it was registered in August 2020. He is also cofounder of Bersatu, a key component of the coalition.

He served as eighth prime minister from March 2020 to August 2021.
