SHAH ALAM, Dec 28 — The initial moments after a vehicle plunges into a lake or quarry are the most critical for survival, as victims have only up to 60 seconds to act before the vehicle becomes submerged and the risk of drowning sharply increases.
Cyberjaya Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Razi Abdul Muttalib said during this early window, the vehicle’s power windows usually still function, making it the best opportunity for victims to escape.
"The most important thing is to control your emotions and remain calm. The first 30 to 40 seconds are crucial to wind down the window and exit the vehicle," he told Media Selangor.
"If fail, victims should immediately attempt to break the side windows using a glass breaker or any hard tool."
Razi advised all drivers to equip their vehicles with a glass-breaking tool and a small knife to cut the seat belt, which is crucial as a precaution for unexpected situations.
For the fastest and most effective way to survive if a vehicle plunges into water, he said victims should immediately remove their seatbelts, wind down or break the side or rear window, exit the vehicle, swim to a safe area, and then contact the Fire and Rescue Department for further assistance.
Razi reminded the public not to attempt breaking the front windshield as they are thicker and harder to break.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a specialised window-breaking tool, he said victims can use other items in the car, such as the headrest or a steering lock, as a last resort.
If the accident involves children, Razi said adults should exit the vehicle first.
“Adults need to remain calm and stabilise the situation before assisting children, so that it does not become chaotic or uncontrollable."
At the same time, members of the public who witness such incidents are advised to immediately report them to the Fire and Rescue Department. They may offer assistance if they have safety equipment such as life jackets or boats.
“If there is no proper equipment or if it poses a risk to personal safety, it is better not to attempt a rescue and to contact the relevant authorities immediately,” he added.
