KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 — A mechanic was sentenced to three years in prison and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court today after he pleaded guilty to robbing two mobile phones and RM1,000 in cash from an Indonesian woman last month.
Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin imposed the sentence on Mohamad Hasrul Aiman Mohd Hanapi, 24, and ordered it to run from the date of his arrest yesterday.
According to the charge, the accused, together with an accomplice (who is being tried separately), robbed the 33-year-old woman of two mobile phones and cash at a cafe on Jalan Langkawi, Setapak, at 3.32pm on November 5.
The charge framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, as well as a fine and caning.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Wafa Zainal Abidin requested a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to Hasrul, but the accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lighter sentence, citing his responsibility for supporting his family and mother.
At the same court, soldier Muhammad Hairul Andika Amir, 30, pleaded not guilty to robbing the same victim at the same location, time, and date.
The court denied him bail and set January 22, 2026, for the next case mention.
