Local authorities tasked with collecting sustainability charges from Jan 1

SHAH ALAM, Dec 21 — Selangor's local authorities will be responsible for collecting sustainability charges imposed on overnight tourists starting January 1, 2026.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim said industry players, including hotel operators, homestay providers, and Airbnb hosts, will also be given up to six months to adopt the system, thereby facilitating data management.

“This implementation will have an impact on transactions. There are changes operators need to make, so we are giving them a period of between three and six months to put the system into practice.

“During this period, our focus will be more on education, explaining how to calculate the charges collected before reports and total amounts are submitted to the local authorities,” he told Media Selangor.

In November, Ng announced that Selangor would impose charges on all types of accommodation, including hotels, homestays, and Airbnb, starting in January to help cover maintenance costs and improvements to state infrastructure.

He said the collection of the sustainability charge would not burden tourists, but would instead help operators maintain facilities and preserve environmental sustainability.
