SHAH ALAM, Dec 2: The Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) for Sungai Selangor in Kampung Asahan is being accelerated to address recurring floods in the area.

Bukit Melawati state constituency coordinator, S. Thiban said the RM20 million project was fast-tracked following assessments by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), which found an urgent need for improved flood control.

“Kampung Asahan has been experiencing frequent floods, especially after the construction of the West Coast Expressway (WCE). Heavy rain causes the river to overflow into drains and eventually enter homes.

“Pumping the water back into the river is no longer effective, so JPS agreed to expedite the RTB project to manage overflow better,” he told Media Selangor.

The project is expected to benefit more than 4,000 residents across several nearby villages, including Kampung Asahan, Kampung Tanjung Siam, Kampung Sepakat, and Kampung Kuantan.

To address prolonged stagnant water caused by recent extreme rainfall, JPS has also deployed four additional mobile pumps.

“There are now five pumps operating, including an older unit from 2017 that can no longer handle the load. The additional pumps help speed up water flow from the drains,” Thiban said.

Moreover, Kampung Asahan village chief Mohamad Fadlly Tomino said that initially, only one temporary relief centre (PPS) was opened, but three more were activated to accommodate the rising number of evacuees following heavy rainfall.

“Some residents returned home briefly to check on the situation and carry out cleaning bit by bit, as there is still water inside their houses,” he said.

Fadlly hopes the government will expedite upgrading works on the riverbank and drainage embankments to handle the overflow from Sungai Selangor, thereby preventing floodwaters from entering homes in the future.

Kampung Asahan is among the areas most prone to flash floods, particularly during periods of high-intensity rainfall.

As of 3.30pm, 21 PPS have been opened in Selangor, sheltering 1,471 evacuees, with Kuala Selangor recording the highest number at 1,407 people across 14 PPS.
