SHAH ALAM, Dec 2 — The Selangor government plans to breathe new life into residential areas over 50 years old, as part of efforts to upgrade old neighbourhoods and enhance urban development, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS) will be the main coordinating agency for the initiative.

“It has not been implemented yet, but we will start planning next year, or possibly in 2027 or 2028. If realised, it will make our state even better.

“I will entrust one of our subsidiaries with this responsibility. We will ask LPHS and local authorities to manage it. Maybe each local council can manage one or two ageing neighbourhoods.

“We do not want a situation where our local councils, after being upgraded to city councils such as Subang Jaya (MBSJ), Klang (MBDK), and possibly Ampang or Hulu Selangor next, to still inherit residential areas that are 50 or 60 years old,” he said today.

Amirudin was speaking to officiate the Caring Government for Residence Improvement Aid (Ceria) scheme presentation ceremony, which was attended by state executive councillor for housing and culture Datuk Borhan Aman Shah.

The menteri besar said efforts to upgrade ageing housing areas require shared government-community commitment.

“We hope there is close cooperation with the residents. The government has done so much, including with cleanups, replacing lifts, and upgrading buildings, but if the community doesn’t take care of it, the place will deteriorate again. This is the reality in several locations,” he said.

On today’s ceremony, Amirudin said nine joint management bodies received Ceria aid worth RM4 million to upgrade their facilities. It is set to benefit over 9,000 people residing in some 2,000 apartment units across six state constituencies.
