Selangor to hold roundtable on domestic violence amid rising cases

SELAYANG, Nov 29 — A roundtable discussion will be held to seek solutions to issues related to domestic violence, including abuse cases, with the aim of strengthening the foundations of family institutions, said state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari.

She said the discussion with state executive councillor for Islam and innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) is also part of preparations for amendments to the Syariah Family Enactment scheduled for 2027.

"According to police data, 1,007 domestic violence cases were reported in Selangor as of September, with 22 per cent in Gombak, which also recorded the highest number of abuse and rape cases.

"These statistics are concerning and a sign that we should strengthen the most important foundation that is family institution.

"As such, the state government will conduct a roundtable discussion," she said yesterday.

Earlier, when officiating November as the state-level National Family Month, Anfaal said fathers play a crucial role in protecting and guiding their children.

“A man’s role is not to raise his hand in violence, but to guide and protect his family, while strengthening communication between husband and wife.

“Children need to be nurtured, taught to manage their emotions, and instilled with strong moral and spiritual values built on a solid foundation,” she said.
