Luas releases water from Tasik Subang Dam amid persistent rain

SHAH ALAM, Nov 29 — The Tasik Subang Dam water release is being done in a controlled manner to lower the water level amid continuous rain, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.

He said this is in line with emergency action plans for the safety and integrity of dam structures, according to the Malaysian Dam Safety Management Guidelines.

“The current situation at the Tasik Subang Dam is under control, with the water release closely monitored by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) and Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd,” he said in a statement today.

Izham added that the dam water level rose rapidly from 79.83 per cent (depth of 37.38m) on Monday to 95.12 per cent (38.09m) at 7am on Tuesday.

He said the water level continued to rise to 38.57m on Thursday and reached 38.66m at 1am yesterday, following extraordinarily heavy rain due to Tropical Storm Senyar.

Izham advised the public to get their updates on Luas’ website to avoid confusion on the condition of Selangor’s dams.

Yesterday, Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said Senyar is reportedly “dead” and that the only remaining effect is the rain.

Previously, MetMalaysia said Senyar had made landfall between Selangor and Negeri Sembilan at midnight on Thursday with wind speeds reaching 65kph.

On Thursday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said 1,173 temporary relief centres are on standby to house up to 244,000 residents at risk of having to evacuate due to the storm.
