SHAH ALAM, Nov 26 — The implementation of 147 quick-win projects by the state government has successfully reduced the impact of the northeast monsoon floods, particularly in hotspot and high-risk areas.

These projects involve 127 locations that previously experienced frequent flooding, including 40 identified hotspot areas and 87 at-risk areas, with a RM33.94 million allocation.

Of the total, 39 projects have been completed, 38 are in progress, and 70 are in the procurement stage, implemented earlier to ensure that critical areas are prepared for the rainy season.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) said this initiative has helped prevent more severe flooding in areas previously prone to it, like Klang and Petaling.

"To reduce flood risks in hotspot or high-risk areas while long-term mitigation projects are being completed, the state government, via JPS, has undertaken 147 quick-win initiatives this year.

“The completed quick-win works have significantly helped to reduce flood impacts in 29 hotspot or high-risk areas, especially in the Klang and Petaling districts,” it said in a statement.

JPS added that the state government has also allocated RM14.1 million for riverbank strengthening, beach maintenance, and pump house works.

Meanwhile, the Federal government allocated RM19.5 million for the restoration of river structures, expected to be completed by the end of November. In total, 74 hotspot areas have been identified and prioritised in the mitigation plan.

Aligned with this, 79 long-term flood mitigation projects are also being implemented, comprising 53 state-funded projects worth RM828 million and 26 Federal-funded projects totalling RM3.46 billion.

Among the major projects is the Klang River Mitigation Programme under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG), which has now reached 29.7 per cent progress and is expected to be completed in 2026.

In preparation for the monsoon season, JPS is also ensuring that all assets, including pump houses, water gates, and technical teams, remain on standby.

The public is advised to stay alert, especially in low-lying areas, and to follow safety instructions issued by the authorities. Any information can be reported to the Selangor JPS hotline at 03-5544 7376.
