SHAH ALAM, Nov 25 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) made history by becoming the first local authority (PBT) in Malaysia to use the Proton e.MAS 7 electric sport utility vehicle (EV) as an official departmental vehicle.

The council announced that eight units of the electric SUV will be deployed in daily operations, strengthening its green agenda and supporting Shah Alam’s efforts toward becoming a smart and low-carbon city.

“The introduction of EVs as departmental vehicles aligns with MBSA’s commitment to green and low-carbon city initiatives, while providing long-term savings in fuel consumption, engine maintenance, and overall operational costs.

“Dynamic Care Resources Sdn Bhd, together with Proton, also plans to install several EV charging stations at strategic locations around Shah Alam to support the operational needs of these vehicles,” it said in a statement.

According to MBSA, the use of EVs can reduce daily operational costs by between 10 and 30 per cent annually compared to petrol or diesel vehicles, as EVs do not require maintenance of components such as engine oil, spark plugs, or timing belts.

“With lower maintenance requirements and more efficient energy use, the EVs will be utilised for city patrols, enforcement duties, project monitoring, site visits, and official departmental matters,” it added.

The council stated that the adoption of EVs forms part of a long-term strategy to gather real operational data to support a full transition to electric vehicles in the future.

“Through this EV implementation, we are targeting a reduction in carbon intensity of at least one tonne per year, in addition to increasing the use of green vehicles at the departmental level to between 10 and 20 per cent by 2030.

“We remain committed to implementing more green initiatives involving technology, more efficient resource management, and active community participation in the city’s sustainability agenda,” it said.

Earlier, the handover ceremony for the Proton e.MAS 7 was officiated by Shah Alam Mayor Dato’ Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim, alongside MBSA officers and invited guests.
