Sg Langat exceeds danger level, Kajang activates 24-hour flood response

SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 — The water level at Sungai Langat in Kampung Jambu has exceeded the danger mark, prompting the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) to activate its 24-hour Quick Response Team to prepare for any flooding eventuality.

Its coordinator Kamarul Izlan Sulaiman said the team is also conducting patrols in several flood hotspots, including Hulu Langat, Sungai Serai, Batu 14, and Batu 18, as well as parts of Kajang town like Kampung Jambu and Taman Muhibbah.

"Water is indeed at a dangerous level, so we have activated our team for 24 hours, with a strength of 20 personnel," he told Media Selangor today.

Immediate aid will be mobilised should flooding occur, although the opening of temporary relief centres (PPS) can only be authorised following orders from the District and Land Office.

“We have already issued precautionary alerts on social media to remind residents to stay vigilant and be prepared for any eventuality,” Kamarul said.

MPKj said that all multipurpose halls under the local authority are prepared for immediate use should they be activated as PPS.

In Gombak, the District Disaster Management Committee said all PPS are on standby to be opened at any time.

All relevant agencies, including the Social Welfare Department and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, have received written directives as early as October to conduct inspections and ensure that the centres are fully functional.

“All PPS are in good condition and ready. If water overflows and the levels continue to rise, we will seek authorisation from the committee chairperson to open the centres immediately,” a spokesman said.

He said the committee received numerous calls this morning regarding rising water levels in several hotspot areas.

“Water has already reached ankle level in several locations, and we are closely monitoring the situation with the village and subdistrict chiefs.

“The disaster operations room was also activated this morning, with four to five personnel on duty at any given time,” said the spokesman.

Site inspections were conducted last week to determine the causes of flooding, including clogged drains and rubbish accumulation, and the relevant agencies have been instructed to address them.
