SHAH ALAM, Nov 21 — The construction of the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Phase One recorded 46.42 per cent progress as of September, thereby exceeding the project’s original target.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim said the development indicates that construction works are on the right track and are following the prescribed schedule.

“The construction progress of this project will be completed in stages based on the extended timeline, with a capacity of 350 million litres per day (MLD) by December 31, 2026.

“For the full preparations with a 700 MLD capacity, completion is expected on June 30, 2027,” he said in response to Pandamaran state assemblyman Tony Leong's query on the project’s progress, during the State Legislative Assembly session today.

The Sungai Rasau WTP is set to become the largest and most modern water treatment plant in Southeast Asia, capable of producing 1,400 MLD upon completion.

It is a key component of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme, which involves developing nine former tin-mining ponds spanning 489 hectares.

The scheme is expected to be fully completed by 2030 and will also function as Malaysia’s first dual-purpose Riverbank Filtration Reservoir (TAPS), supporting water supply while serving as a flood mitigation system.

Earlier today, Izham said that the implementation of the Sungai Buloh Flood Mitigation Plan Phase 2 will take at least five years, as it must go through several key stages, including catchment studies, land acquisition, and procurement processes.

As such, the state government approved RM27 million for immediate measures to address the flooding problem, some of which have been completed, while others are ongoing pending the finalisation of the flood mitigation project.
