Thailand reports surge in influenza cases, 100 deaths recorded

BANGKOK, Nov 20 — Thailand has reported a spike in influenza cases during the rainy season, with 100 deaths and 940,869 cumulative cases recorded as of Friday (November 14).

Deputy Government Spokesperson Airin Phanrit said data from the Disease Control Department shows that from the beginning of the year to November 14, 2025, Thailand recorded 940,869 influenza cases, including 100 fatalities.

"The age group with the highest morbidity rate per 100,000 population is children aged five to nine, while most fatalities occurred among older adults, with an average age of 61 years," she said in a statement today.

Airin added that the 100 fatalities ranged from one to 95 years old, with a median age of 61.

Although the number of influenza cases has shown a downward trend in November, cluster outbreaks continue to rise, particularly in prisons, educational institutions and training centres.

"It was found that 57 per cent of those who died had underlying health conditions such as kidney disease, coronary artery disease, hypertension, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), stroke, and intellectual disabilities. Meanwhile, 94 per cent had no history of receiving the influenza vaccine," she said.

The most commonly detected influenza strain is A/H3N2, accounting for 76 per cent of cases, followed by A/H1N1 and Type B.

Airin said the government is concerned about public health during the changing weather conditions.

"We strongly encourage the seven high-risk groups to receive the annual influenza vaccine to boost immunity. Please take care of your health," she said.
