State looks to improve disaster aid delivery, protect victim welfare

SHAH ALAM, Nov 19 — The state government will monitor disaster aid delivery to ensure each victim receives assistance within appropriate windows, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said that so far, aid such as repairs, managed by Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, is usually channelled within 48 hours.

“In the event of a disaster, welfare and repair aid are channelled through several sources including Yayasan MBI and relevant agencies like zakat.

“At the state government level, Yaysan MBI is always channelling aid. For instance, during the storm in Sijangkang and Meru, a RM400,000 fund was distributed. However, for private property, it depends on the respective agency’s governance.

“We will consider this matter and look at how aid delivery can be expedited,” he said in reply to a supplementary question from Sungai Burong assemblyman Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

In October, Yayasan MBI channelled RM400,000 into repairing schools and homes affected by a storm that hit Sijangkang and Meru.

The aid covered repairs to roofs and school facilities. From the amount, RM300,000 was allocated to the affected area, while RM100,000 was contributed through MBI’s zakat wakalah fund.
