ECRL scaffolding collapse: MRL halts works on MRR2

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL), the owner of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, announced that construction works involving steel scaffolding at Jalan MRR2 FT28 towards Batu Caves have been halted.

According to a statement by MRL, construction activities in the area have been suspended pending a full investigation by authorities after the steel scaffolding collapsed onto a passing car along the MRR2 around 2pm today.

“The driver of the affected vehicle is safe. The ECRL will provide immediate financial assistance to the vehicle owner while awaiting the findings of the authorities’ investigation and the related claims process.

“The authorities and emergency response agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department, police, the Public Works Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Department are on site to carry out further action,” said MRL.

The company noted that the clearing and removal of the structure had been successfully undertaken under the authorities’ supervision.

“The ECRL is committed to providing full cooperation to all authorities involved in the ongoing investigation and to ensuring that all safety measures are strictly adhered to.

“Our priority is the safety of road users, the public and project workers. We appreciate the attention and cooperation of all parties regarding this incident and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said MRL.

It added that the affected stretch has since been reopened to the public.

Earlier, a woman narrowly escaped injury after her car was crushed by scaffolding from the ECRL construction works along the MRR2 in Batu Caves near the Gombak toll plaza.

According to MRL, the temporary structure used for works on Road Under Bridge (RUB) #16 had reportedly failed and collapsed onto a Suzuki Swift car at around 2pm.

The temporary canopy was installed to prevent construction debris from falling onto the road and to facilitate RUB #16 works.

Construction works for RUB #16 were completed last month, and dismantling of the temporary structure had been scheduled for Thursday, after it received approval.
