KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — Malaysia has emphasised the implementation of 141 actions under 16 strategic priorities outlined in the National Child Policy and Action Plan 2026-2030 to strengthen child protection in the digital environment.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the new plan provides clear direction to restore and enhance children’s rights within a safe, inclusive, and resilient environment.
“Technological advancements offer opportunities but also increase risk, such as cyberbullying, exploitation, online predators, and emotional threats to children.
“Digital challenges extend beyond national borders, so it is essential for us to collaborate, share best practices, and build a secure digital ecosystem across the region,” she told the media after officiating the Asean ICT Forum 2025 on online child protection and the launch of the National Child Policy and Action Plan 2026-2030.
Nancy stressed that child protection requires a coordinated effort involving families, teachers, communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the private sector.
She also said many parents and teachers are still unaware of online risks that could jeopardise children’s safety and well-being.
Commenting on the rise in online sexual exploitation, she noted that the trend is driven by growing awareness and the emergence of new spaces exploited by predators.
“Young people aged 15 to 24 are particularly at risk, as many of them are not engaged in education, training, or employment.
“This emphasises the need to empower children, not only to protect them but also to ensure they understand digital developments and can make safe decisions,” she added.
On the two-day forum that began today, Nancy said the event aims to improve understanding among stakeholders and ensure new policies are both relevant and effective.
