Deputy minister urges workers, residents exempt from Genting road fee

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said proposed charges on vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands should not be referred to as a toll, but rather vehicle charges for a private road owned by the operator in the resort area.

He said using accurate terms is crucial to avoid confusion, since the country already has 33 toll concessionaires.

He also suggested that the fee only be imposed on visitors using the road for recreational purposes, with workers, landowners and residents in the area to be exempt.

“What is the effect of the vehicle charges on the operator of Genting Highlands? I suppose if they set too high a price, fewer people will visit. That’s the risk they have to take.

“Tourists can visit other places that do not have such charges or do not have private roads. My personal opinion is that the vehicle charges should not be imposed on the workers,” he said when winding up the ministry’s committee-level debate on the Supply Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Replying to an interjection by Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat), who asked whether there is an act or law regarding vehicle charges on private roads, Ahmad said the land and roads built on the land were subject to the state government.

“If there are certain regulations, I think, of course, the regulations involve the relevant municipal council. Whether there is a specific provision, this is also under the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT),” he said.

Previously, Genting Malaysia Bhd confirmed it would start charging vehicles to enter Jalan Genting Highlands.
