SHAH ALAM, Nov 3 — The state government is developing a digital halal database to make it easier for consumers to verify the authenticity of halal logos on products in the market.

State Executive Councillor for Islamic affairs, innovation, and the halal industry Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the halal ecosystem and protect consumers from confusion.

“One of the initiatives currently being undertaken by the state government is the development of a digital database accessible to consumers to verify the authenticity of a product’s halal logo,” he told Media Selangor.

Fahmi stressed that the only halal logo recognised by the government is the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) issued by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

“Any halal logo other than the SPHM is invalid and may mislead consumers,” he said.

Under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has the authority to take action against any party that misuses the halal logo.

“Penalties may include fines, compounds, or imprisonment depending on the severity of the offence,” Fahmi said.

The councillor was commenting on the actions of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Muslim-Friendly Watch (MFW), which introduced the 'Muslim Choice' recognition for operators purportedly meeting the organisation’s prescribed criteria and standards.

Meanwhile, Jakim Director-General Datuk Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the use of the term 'Muslim Choice' or similar phrases does not constitute an officially recognised halal certification or endorsement by the authorities.

Such terminology could confuse the public regarding the halal status of a product or premises.

“All parties are advised not to use or display any form of logo, term, or statement implying halal status without official authorisation from Jakim or the respective State Islamic Religious Council (Main) or State Islamic Religious Department (Jain),” he said.

Sirajuddin added that Jakim had met with MFW on August 23 last year and informed the organisation that the 'Muslim Choice' recognition could confuse consumers.

“However, based on reports from the state religious authorities, MFW was found to have continued its activity,” he said.
