MAHB plans fixes for recurring aerotrain disruptions

SEPANG, Oct 31 — Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said it would implement a comprehensive action plan to address the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) aerotrain’s recurring reliability issues.

The project will be managed by the team from MAHB, collaborating with contractors, consultants, and an independent technical assessor. It is being developed with active engagement from all relevant parties.

MAHB added that it would continue to work closely with the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and the Transport Ministry (MOT) to address and resolve the issue.

“The decision follows a series of aerotrain incidents that prompted the airport operator to formally address concerns with contractors Alstom and IJMC-PESTECH Joint Venture (IPJV) and demand immediate corrective action,” it said in a statement today.

Preliminary assessments revealed a declining trend in system reliability, particularly the vehicle and power distribution systems. Despite receiving data and assurances from the contractors, the information provided does not instil sufficient confidence in the aerotrain’s current reliability, it said.

MAHB said as an immediate measure, shuttle buses will be deployed during off-peak hours from 11pm to 5am daily (with the train halted) to facilitate planned and additional inspection and rectification works.

Additionally, from 5am to 11pm, shuttle buses will operate alongside the aerotrain to ensure uninterrupted passenger movement.

MAHB said it is prepared to mobilise extensive resources to provide full shuttle services in line with the requirements of the comprehensive action plan.

Since resuming service in July 2025, the aerotrains have carried more than 6.55 million passengers and operated nearly 95,000 trips.

“Passenger safety and comfort remain our top priority, and we are committed to upholding the highest operational standards as we work to restore full confidence in the aerotrain system,” said MAHB.
