Israeli airstrikes kill at least 18 in Gaza, violating ceasefire

ISTANBUL, Oct 29 — At least 18 people were killed and dozens injured on Tuesday in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, marking a new violation of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.

Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported that eyewitnesses and medical sources said the strikes occurred within what is known as the 'yellow line'.

This refers to the zone to which Israeli forces have withdrawn under the ceasefire agreement. It is a physical partition running through the Gaza Strip, dividing the territory in half, located inside Gaza, south of Gaza City and north of Khan Younis.

The sources said that a strike on a home in the Sabra neighbourhood in western Gaza City killed four people, injured nine others, and left several missing under the rubble. Three Palestinians were killed in an airstrike that hit a house in the al-Yarmouk area in central Gaza City.

A child was killed and others were injured in an Israeli strike on an apartment on Al-Jalaa Street in western Gaza City. Another airstrike targeted a house in the Al-Shati refugee camp, also in western Gaza City.

Three Palestinians were killed and several others wounded in an Israeli strike that hit a school sheltering displaced people in the town of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. Five more Palestinians were killed when Israeli forces struck a vehicle in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

An Israeli airstrike killed two Palestinians and injured others after striking an apartment in the Al-Amal neighbourhood in western Khan Younis.

The Israeli army launched a series of air and artillery strikes across Gaza on Tuesday following orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to carry out “immediate, powerful strikes” over alleged ceasefire violations by Hamas.

According to AA reporters, an airstrike hit the Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City, while artillery fire targeted areas east of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. Missiles also struck around the Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City.

The ceasefire agreement has been in place since October 10 under United States (US) President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan.

The first phase of the deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisions the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Israel has killed more than 68,500 people, primarily women and children, and injured over 170,000 others in attacks on Gaza since October 2023.
