KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has lauded the newly concluded KL Accord as a landmark achievement, characterising it as a historic milestone that will significantly advance bilateral stability and cooperation.
He also reaffirmed Cambodia’s strong commitment to fully implementing the deal and pledged to continue working closely with Thailand.
“On behalf of the Cambodian people, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for his decisive leadership and steadfast commitment to supporting the lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand and for his tireless efforts to make it a reality.
“I also wish to convey my sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his unwavering support and facilitation throughout this peace process until the successful conclusion,” he said during the signing ceremony of the agreement on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits today.
Also present at the signing ceremony was Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who signed the accord, witnessed by Anwar and Trump.
Manet is confident that the international community and key partners will continue to provide support and contribute to the effective implementation of the KL Accord.
He noted that senior commanders from both the Thai and Cambodian Armed Forces are currently engaged in discussions regarding an initial, phased withdrawal of heavy weaponry, describing it as an early demonstration of their shared commitment to advancing the terms of the agreement.
“At the same time, I strongly hope for the prompt release of our 18 soldiers on humanitarian grounds and as agreed in the Joint Declarations,” Manet said.
He added that he has nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts to promote peace, not only between Cambodia and Thailand but also among other nations.
Thailand and Cambodia have long been locked in a border dispute stretching 817 kilometres, with the latest flare-up on July 24 leading to a military confrontation.
On July 28, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hosted a crucial meeting in Putrajaya between Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, which successfully eased tensions along their shared border.
The ceasefire, seen as a significant Asean achievement, has helped prevent the conflict from escalating and ensured the safety of thousands of civilians.
Malaysia, as Asean chair for 2025 under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', is hosting the Summit starting today until Tuesday (October 28) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
