SHAH ALAM, Oct 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim commended United States President Donald Trump for his tenacity and courage in facilitating the peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia.
Speaking at the signing of the joint declaration on a peace deal, dubbed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, Anwar said the world needs more leaders with such determination to promote peace.
“When I first received your call urging me to do more and supporting our initiative, and when you personally called both prime ministers (of Cambodia and Thailand) to push for a speedy peace settlement, I just to say a great thank you.
“We, of course, admire your tenacity and courage, because the world needs leaders who promote peace strongly,” he said at the signing ceremony held in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here today.
Anwar thanked Asean member states for their support in facilitating the peace deal, adding that the bloc, including Malaysia, would continue to support initiatives that strengthen regional and global stability.
He also expressed his appreciation for Trump’s commitment in various peace efforts, including in Gaza.
“I thank the president for his effort to secure peace in many parts of the world, including Gaza, and urge him to remain focused and ensure that there's comprehensive peace that the world requires.
“I am delighted, truly, to hear from you personally about your determination to ensure that peace is achieved even in the most intractable areas. Almost impossible, but you did it.
“And we have shown our support and call on the United States, in particular, to continue this with the support of many (countries from around) the world,” he said.
Thailand-Cambodia diplomatic relations became hostile following the May 28 brief exchange of gunfire between soldiers of both countries stationed near the Preah Vihear province in northern Cambodia.
The dispute strained bilateral ties and disrupted trade activities in the border areas. Both countries share an 817km-long border.
