ISTANBUL, Oct 26 — United States (US) President Donald Trump has announced a 10 per cent tariff increase on Canada on Saturday, citing a “fraudulent” advertisement that featured former president Ronald Reagan and aired during the World Series.

Anadolu Ajansi reported him as saying that “legal options” are being reviewed following the incident.

“Canada was caught red-handed putting up a fraudulent advertisement on Ronald Reagan’s speech on tariffs,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

He cited the Reagan Foundation, which stated that it “created an ad campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan.”

Trump noted that the foundation acknowledged the ad “misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address”, and that it “did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks”.

He claimed the purpose of the “fraud” was the province of Ottawa’s hope that the US Supreme Court would “rescue” Canada on tariffs that have “long been used to hurt Washington.”

The US is now in a position to protect itself against “high and overbearing Canadian tariffs,” as well as those imposed by other nations.

“Ronald Reagan loved tariffs for purposes of national security and the economy, but Canada said he did not,” Trump said.

He criticised Ottawa for allowing the advertisement to air “last night” during the World Series, despite knowing it was “a fraud.”

Trump described the act as a “serious misrepresentation of the facts and a hostile act,” adding that the advertisement should have been removed immediately.
