Malaysia, Brazil commit to boosting bilateral ties across various sectors

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 25 — Malaysia and Brazil are determined to enhance bilateral relations across multiple sectors, including in trade and investment, energy, and human capital development, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said both countries also committed to boost cooperation in the semiconductor, food technology, education, and culture fields.

“We have some expertise (in the semiconductor sector) to share with you, while in food technology, you (Brazil) have better expertise.

“We also discussed the possibility of increased poultry product imports from Brazil,” he said.

Anwar said this in a joint press conference with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after their bilateral meeting in Seri Perdana here today.

Anwar said Malaysia and Brazil could also be key partners in fostering deeper collaboration between Asean and Latin America.

“Let us ensure that our two countries and two regions, Latin America and Asean, work together to become one of the key pillars in ensuring our relations extend beyond trade investment, politics and culture,” he said.

During the press conference, Anwar commended Lula da Silva’s stance against the atrocities committed against Palestinians and the ongoing genocide in Gaza, a cause close to many Malaysians’ hearts.

He said the Brazilian president is one of the few world leaders who have shown exceptional courage in speaking out against the aggression.

Anwar also congratulated Lula da Silva on being conferred an honorary doctorate from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in recognition of his leadership and contributions to advancing the Global South, during a special convocation today.

Lula da Silva is on an official visit to Malaysia until Tuesday as a guest of the Asean chair, in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits here.

The visit is his first to Malaysia since assuming office for a new term in January 2023, and is the first by a Brazilian president to an Asean Summit since the country becomes the bloc’s sectoral dialogue partner in 2022.
