KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — Malaysia remains committed to supporting Thailand and Cambodia in their efforts to strengthen peace and stability along their border, in line with the spirit of mutual understanding and regional cooperation under the Asean framework.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin affirmed this in an Instagram post after chairing the second Special General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at Wisma Perwira ATM today.
Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian National Defence Minister Tea Seiha led their respective delegations to the meeting.
“Malaysia hopes that the agreement reached today, as well as the ongoing peace process, will continue to be respected to ensure lasting peace along the border areas.
“Malaysia is proud to host and foster close relations with these two friendly nations, reflecting the country’s active role in promoting peace and stability across the Asean region,” he said.
The two neighbours held the first GBC in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia, on September 10.
Earlier, it was reported that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to expedite ongoing efforts to demarcate their shared land boundary, following a two-day Special Meeting of the Joint Commission on Demarcation for the Land Boundary (JBC) held in Chanthaburi, Thailand's eastern province, from Tuesday (October 21) to yesterday.
Thailand and Cambodia are working towards lasting peace along their 817-kilometre border, which has long been a source of disputes.
Tensions between them escalated into a military confrontation in the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear border areas on July 24 before both sides agreed to a ceasefire following Malaysia’s mediation efforts in Putrajaya on July 28.
