KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — Cases of fatal accidents during the Op Lancar period, conducted nationwide from October 17 to October 21 in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration, recorded a 9.8 per cent drop.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that although the number of road accidents increased by 5.2 per cent to 8,940 cases during the period this year, compared to 8,408 cases last year, the number of fatal accidents and deaths recorded a decrease, by 9.8 and 12 per cent respectively.
82 fatal accident cases were recorded this year, compared to 90 in 2024, while the number of deaths dropped to 85 people, from 96 people the previous year.
“Motorcyclists and pillion riders remain the highest contributors to deaths with 61 people or 72 per cent this year, a decrease of 20 per cent from 76 deaths last year,” he said in a statement today.
Approximately 43,379 summonses were issued this year, compared with 52,090 in 2024, a reduction of 8,711.
"Based on the decrease in the number of deaths and summonses issued, the awareness of road users of traffic regulations and road laws is increasing," Yusri said.
He added that throughout the five days of the operation, 9.9 million vehicles used the North-South Expressway, including the East Coast Expressway 2, the Karak Expressway (1.2 million vehicles), and the West Coast Expressway (618,173 vehicles).
