KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — The Education Ministry (MOE) will examine appropriate guidelines following the proposal to implement immediate measures aimed at enhancing safety in all educational institutions, including a ban on the use of smartphones in schools for students under 16 years of age.
It said the guidelines are expected to be issued soon.
“The Education Ministry also welcomes the Cabinet’s decision today, which outlined immediate steps to address security issues in educational institutions, including efforts to increase police monitoring in all educational institutions.
“It also supports the government’s intention to set an age limit of 16 years for the use of social media to protect children and adolescents from cyber threats, with the implementation mechanism being reviewed by the Communications Ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” the MOE said in a statement.
It added that all educational institutions under the ministry are also required to strengthen the role of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) and local communities in ensuring that the security aspects of the institutions can be improved.
In addition, cross-ministry and related agency cooperation also reflects the Madani government’s continuous efforts in strengthening the security aspects in all institutions of learning under the MOE.
