China requests WTO consultations with India on electric vehicles, batteries subsidies

BEIJING, Oct 15 — China has requested consultations with India at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regarding its subsidy measures in the electric vehicle and battery sectors, said China's Commerce Ministry.

Xinhua reported a ministry spokesman as saying that India's relevant measures allegedly violate several WTO obligations, including the principle of national treatment, and constitute import substitution subsidies, which are explicitly prohibited under WTO rules.

In a statement, it was noted that these measures unfairly benefit India's domestic industries and undermine China's legitimate interests. The spokesman added that China will take resolute measures to effectively safeguard the lawful rights and interests of its domestic industries.

Over time, a number of India's trade and economic measures have been alleged to be non-compliant with WTO rules, sparking widespread concern among its members.

The spokesman urged India to abide by its WTO commitments and to correct its wrong practices immediately.
