KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the act of flying the Israeli flag or displaying stickers with Hebrew writing, which offends public sensitivity and contradicts national policy, is totally unacceptable.
Considering it an act of treason, he agreed that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) should take appropriate action against any individuals involved, so that it serves as a lesson to others.
"This offends the public and goes against the overall national policy. This is a policy that cuts across all parties, including the flag issue. Whatever the intention, it is still wrong,” Anwar said during the Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was replying to Paya Besar MP Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah's supplementary query about the government's stance regarding the flying of the Israeli flag during an event in the country.
Previously, the police had opened an investigation paper into the issue of raising the Israeli flag during the '500 Pelayaran Solidariti Kelantan untuk Gaza' programme under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949.
They are also conducting a detailed probe into a four-wheel-drive vehicle allegedly displaying a sticker with Hebrew text interpreted as either 'Malaysia is our home' or 'Malaysia is in our hands'.
