Floods: Kedah records rise in evacuees, over 300 still at PPS in three states

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — The number of flood evacuees in Kedah increased this morning, while the situation in Perak and Johor remained unchanged, with more than 300 residents still housed at temporary relief centres (PPS).

In Kedah, the number of evacuees taking shelter at Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena increased this morning to 100 people from 30 families, compared with 86 people from 25 families the previous night.

Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said the increase was due to the relocation of evacuees from Mukim Lesong, specifically from Kampung Permatang Limau, to the centre.

Currently, only two rivers are at alert level: Sungai Ketil in Kampung Bongor, Baling, and Sungai Bata in Kampung Bata, Kubang Pasu.

In Perak, the number of flood evacuees in the Larut, Matang and Selama district remained at 107 people from 33 families who were placed at three PPS in Taiping as of 8am today.

The Perak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) secretariat said that 22 residents from eight families from Taman Mawar, Taman Simpang Makmur, Taman Indah, Taman Kota Jaya, and Kampung Jalapang Jaya were being accommodated at the PPS at SK Simpang.

38 victims from 11 families from Kampung Matang Jambu and Kampung Telok Kertang are still taking shelter at SK Matang, while 47 victims from 14 families from Kampung Matang Pasir and Kampung Matang Gelugor are housed at SK Matang Gelugor.

Thunderstorms have been forecast for this afternoon in Larut, Matang and Selama; Kerian, Perak Tengah, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, and Batang Padang.

In Johor, the number of flash flood victims relocated to a PPS in Pontian remained at 159 people from 46 families as of 8am today.

Johor JPBN chairman Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said the centre at SK Melayu Raya, which opened at 6am yesterday, was housing residents from five villages: Kampung Melayu Raya, Kampung Paya Embun, Kampung Pak Kalib, Kampung Seri Menanti, and Kampung Maju Jaya.

Fine weather was reported in the district this morning.
